Construction Walk Through – Do you know what is behind your walls?

Moisture damaged subflooring, untreated grout, black mold, slow plumbing leaks, poor floor support from failed joists are a few things we run into that can turn into a slightly larger project than originally anticipated.

This is why Music City Shower performs a pre-construction walkthrough on every job. We remeasure and confirm your bathroom layout and color selection, check existing interior plumbing as well in the crawl space and inspect joists, exterior plumbing and flooring.

This enables us to not only prepare us for the entire scope of work but also our customers need to be informed about what is really going on in their bathrooms. This also prevents sticker shock of a higher than anticipated repair bill at the end of a job and gets everyone on the same page.

Having said that, we can perform several precautionary measures such as a moisture and water pressure check, but we truly don’t know what is behind your walls until we start our demolition process.

For example, on many older homes that have cast iron plumbing – trying to connect a modern PVC plumbing part can be impossible. Many times the interior of the cast iron has corroded to the point that it will essentially disintegrate when handled. Another would be black mold or spongy subflooring behind the interior walls as a result of a slow faucet leak that is invisible at first glance.

This customer’s crawlspace told us a vastly different story than what was on top. Failed cast iron plumbing lines had led to a moldy subfloor and joists in need of replacement. Glad we were able to bring this to the customer’s attention ahead of time

Old grout that was left unsealed for years allowing moisture behind the walls, eventually causing the tile to fail and black mold spores to grow behind the walls. Black mold is toxic and can cause a multitude of respiratory and skin issues. We were able to catch and fix the issue before the mold was too bad, saving them thousands in mold remediation costs.

This is a great example of not being able to totally know what is going on until the walls are opened up. As you can see the interior of this wall is rotted, dangerous and in need of full replacement. The customer was thankful it was taken care of before it led to a major issue.

Despite the fact that you can never tell the full story until demolition begins, we can greatly lessen the chances of a surprise during your project by performing our preconstruction walkthrough. We do things the right way here at Music City Shower so you can rest assured that we will leave your bathroom in the best possible condition and ready for you and your family to enjoy for many years to come.
